What to Expect from the Kiwi Dollar

The kiwi dollar has had an interesting year, rising from below 65 US cents in January to just under 75 cents in September. After a sharp correction between early September and mid-October, the kiwi could be on the rise again after the release of weaker-than-expected Chinese trade figures and higher-than-expected inflation results. A weaker US dollar has helped the kiwi make its biggest jump in more than six weeks, fuelling bets that the Reserve Bank of New Zealand will refrain from easing beyond next month.

Auckland Struggles with Lack of Supply

Auckland continues to struggle with a lack of housing supply in key areas. Despite long-term plans to build more dwellings in an effort to relieve housing pressures, 35 projects recently failed to get off the ground due to funding and construction cost issues. While new building consents remain strong and Auckland prices were flat in September, Finance Minister Bill English has signalled a significant increase to house building in an effort to further cool the market.
